The capital of Spain, located in the heart of the peninsula and right in the center of the Castillian plain 646 meters above sea level, has a population of over three million. A cosmopolitan city, a business center, headquarters for the Public Administration, Government, Spanish Parliament and the home of the Spanish Royal Family, Madrid also plays a major role in both the banking and industrial sectors. Most of its industry is located in the Southern fringe of the city, where important textile, food and metal working factories are clustered. Madrid is characterized by intense cultural and artistic activity and a very lively nightlife. The grand metropolis of Madrid can trace its origins to the times of Arab Emir Mohamed I (852-886), who ordered the construction of a fortress on the left bank of the Manzanares river. Later it became the subject of a dispute between the Christians and Arabs until it was conquered by Alonso VI in the 11th century. At the end of the 17th century, a defensive wall was built for the protection of the new outlying areas, tracing the roads of Segovia, Toledo and Valencia. During the 18th century, under the reign of Carlos III, were designed the great arteries of the city, such as the Paseo del Prado and Paseo las Acacias.

That Budapest - one of the most beautiful cities in the world – has developed where it is, is not down to some historical accident. Take a look at Gellért Hill, right next to the River Danube as it flows majestically through the centre of the modern city. It was precisely the combination of the relative ease of crossing the River here and the natural protection the hill offered against invasion that decided the earliest settlers it was the ideal place to build a town. The Eravisci, a tribe of highly cultured Celts, had already settled at Gellért Hill in the third and fourth centuries B.C. They worked with iron, decorated their earthenware pots and even minted their own coins. Later, the Romans built a settlement at today’s Óbuda. They called it Aquincum and it was an important station along the limes which ran alongside the River Danube.

When you return home and unpack your suitcase, memories of a holiday fade away quickly. Much was new and unfamiliar with all kinds of interesting experiences - many of them unforgettable. The camera captures these events in a picture. Revisiting a capital city can then be quite a surprise when the panorama from a few years ago is suddenly no longer there. Take Potsdamer Platz for example - the extensive redesign was only completed at the end of 2009. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was still one of the most important traffic junctions in Berlin but after its destruction in World War II, it remained an inner-city wasteland for decades. Since then, the modern high-rise buildings at Potsdamer Platz are a familiar site in the city. If you compare holiday photos from the past 20 years, you realise how drastically the former no man's land has altered. Long forgotten is the red Infobox, a reminder of change that appears time after time again in photo albums. In the middle of September, the statues of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels on Marx-Engels-Forum near the Rotes Rathaus had to be moved due to construction work. The bronze statues are now located around 80 metres away. Instead of facing east, both communists now face west – a memorable photo opportunity. In 2017, the figures will return to their original site. A rather unspectacular but still remarkable motif for Berlin is a green field in the middle of the city. Today all you can see, experience and photograph is an empty space on the former palace grounds even though this place has a great deal of history. The old Berliner Stadtschloss from the 15th century and later the Palast der Republik were both situated here but have now gone. In the near future, the construction of the Humboldt Forum will begin, creating a new characteristic motif for Berlin for holidays of the future.
